Probabilistic environmental risk assessment of microplastics in marine habitats

چکیده

Microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment and given large number of published hazard exposure studies, quantitative environmental risks assessments microplastics become feasible. We present here first risk assessment for marine waters based only on measured concentrations. The Thevariability uncertainty data was accounted assessment, while probabilistic species sensitivity distributions were used from which a probability distribution extracted predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC). By dividing by PNEC-distribution, we able to calculate characterisation ratios each water body measurements performed. Results show good coverage world's major bodies concentrations (MECs), could be improved aligning type particles tested studies (size, form, polymer) those actually found oceans. Overall, mean (PNEC) is 3.84·106 part m-3, with Oryzias melastigma being most sensitive (calculated NOEC 3.90·106 m-3). Interestingly, dose descriptor that literature above 10-20 ?m highest observed no effect (HONEC), indicates very low or null toxicity these larger MPs towards organisms. MEC 1.5·103 Atlantic Pacific Ocean. Although there small overlap associated RCR (0.00002 % points), 4·10-4 therefore unlikely available data. However, as increasing amounts plastic reach environment, RCRs can expected increase future.

Microplastics in the marine environment.

This review discusses the mechanisms of generation and potential impacts of microplastics in the ocean environment. Weathering degradation of plastics on the beaches results in their surface embrittlement and microcracking, yielding microparticles that are carried into water by wind or wave action. Unlike inorganic fines present in sea water, microplastics concentrate persistent organic polluta...

Risk Assessment for Environmental Management of the Marine Environment

Planned emissions and unplanned incidents in the marine environment have the potential to result in adverse environmental effects if a discharge of hazardous material or release of energy comes into contact with sensitive receptors. Environmental risk management is the process of systematically identifying credible environmental hazards, analysing the likelihood of occurrence and severity of th...

Three Environmental Probabilistic Risk Problems

Risk analysis may be defined as the problem of estimating the probabilities of rare events and the magnitudes of associated damages. The topic unifies the environmental sciences. This paper considers risk analyses for earthquakes, wildfires and floods. The computation of insurance premiums is used to motivate and unite the work.

Benthic Marine Habitats in Antarctica

Benthic habitats in Antarctica differ from those in other parts of the world in several important characterislies. Most of the Southern Ocean overlies the abyssal plain, where the sediments are primarily siliceous. Icc-rafted debris provides isolated patches of hard substratum but otherwise little is known of the biology of the deep-sea in Antarctica. Shallow WOller habitats are heavily influen...

Environmental risk assessment of a dam during construction phase

The present study was conducted to assess the possible risks induced by construction of Gavi Dam in Ilam Province; western part of Iran, using MIKE-11 model and technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution. For this purpose, vulnerable zone of the dam site against the flooding risk of Gavi River was calculated for different return periods. The flooding zones were stimulated...
